First Aid; WFR, EMT & WEMT
  (90 hours - 24 days)
          Wilderness First Responder (WFR) – 90 hours
This course is a combination of wilderness specific emergency scenarios and interactive classroom time. IWLS exceeds the guidelines for WFR courses set down by both the Wilderness Medical Society and OSHA.

General Progression and Curriculum for WFR course.
          • Introduction/Registration; Infection control, CPR; Case studies
          • Anatomy & physiology; General concepts; ALS/BLS I; Patient assessment system;
                    Case studies
          • Circulatory, respiratory systems; Fractures, dislocations; Stable injuries;
                    Splints I - extremities; Case studies
          • Nervous system, Spine injuries, Wounds, Burns, Principles of trauma, Splints II - spine,
                    Emergency childbirth; Lifting, moving, extrication; Case studies
          • Quiz/Case studies; Toxins, bites & stings; Medical emergencies; Altitude or diving;
                    Litter packaging and carries; Patient carries; Small group simulations
          • Hypothermia, frostbite & cold injury; Hyperthermia & heat illness; ALS/BLS II;
                    Near drowning; Search and rescue; Simulation; Case studies
          • Lightning; Allergies & anaphylaxis; Backcountry medicine; Improvised litters; Simulation;
                    Case studies
          • Medical & legal issues; Personal preparedness; Final case studies; Final simulation;
                    Final exam

          Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT)
  With a combination of class time and experiential skills in a wilderness environment this 24-day course draws on both the collective experience of professional outdoor leaders and professional EMS practitioners for a comprehensive curriculum that teaches students solid emergency care in a wilderness setting. In keeping with IWLS desire to raise the industry standards, the WEMT course goes above and beyond in furthering professional development Upon completion students are eligible to be certified as EMTs and WEMTs.

         Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
  This course is taught through the state of Alaska. The EMS instructors meet all state requirements, and national registry testing is available upon completion. IWLS takes pride in working with local EMS crews to provide the highest level of professional emergency care.
