What makes IWLS world class...
INSTRUCTORS: IWLS instructors are exceptional outdoor leaders. Every IWLS course draws on decades of experience with technical instruction, outdoor leadership training, high altitude guiding, and countless expeditions in Alaska, Utah, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nepal, India, Bhutan, Pakistan, China, Russia, Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Bolivia, Antarctica and Mexico. IWLS leaders are technically skilled, passionate about wilderness, and committed to each and every student. Their dedication insures each student an educational experience that will exceed their expectations!
In addition to the hard technical skills, IWLS instructors are expert in the softer skills of risk management, client care, and group dynamics.
IWLS leaders are committed professionals who are exemplary instructors. They are enthusiastic for what they do and the places that they do it in!
PRACTICAL GUIDING EXPERIENCE: No other leadership organization has the technical background and the hands on leadership and guiding experience of IWLS. We are experts at teaching the hard skills and have over 15 years of practical experience that validates all of our programs. IWLS students will learn the skills needed to work with all possible guest bases; from boy scouts and student groups to the most demanding clients on high altitude mountaineering expeditions.
INSTRUCTION: IWLS works with the Wilderness Education Association to offer the highest quality experiential education. The WEA has been certifying outdoor leaders for more than 25 years. Together, we provide a comprehensive outdoor leadership-training program that incorporates advanced technical instruction and the processing skills associated with quality leadership such as risk management, decision-making and judgment.
COURSE SIZE: We believe that group size is one of the most important factors determining the kind of experience our students will have. Smaller group sizes give us the flexibility to meet individual goals and expectations. Because of this, we keep our groups to ten students with a minimum of two instructors. Mountaineering programs are limited to 9 students and 3 instructors.
SAFETY: The International Wilderness Leadership School has a perfect safety record. We have had no major injuries or accidents in more than fifteen years of operations. This is not happenstance; safety is our highest priority. We were the first leadership program to carry satellite phones on all of our trips and continue to use them on every trip. We also carry pulse oximeters, stethoscopes, and expedition first aid kits on all treks or climbs that go to altitude.
RANGE OF PROGRAMS: We offer comprehensive leadership programs in some of the world's most remote and fascinating areas including: Mexico, Alaska, Tanzania, Chile, Utah, The Yukon, Argentina, British Columbia, Nepal, Kenya and more. IWLS course locations provide valuable practical experience for outdoor leaders interested in working in the international guiding industry.
QUALITY OF SERVICE: Customer Service and attention to detail are what set us apart! The following is a partial list of our satisfied customers: Putney Student Travel, Sheldon Jackson College, Princess Cruise Lines, Colorado State University, Adventure Treks, Royal Caribbean Cruise lines, Southern Georgia University, Rowland Hall Academy, The Boy Scouts of America, Cornerstone Wilderness Therapy, Patagonia, Kelty, Central Michigan University, Holland America Lines, and the Canadian Heart Association (choose IWLS staff to lead their fundraising Kilimanjaro climb in 2005 and Aconcagua Expedition in 2006)
EQUIPMENT: IWLS uses only the best outdoor gear available. To this end we have formed corporate partnerships with Patagonia, Kelty, Mammut, Sealine, MSR, Thermarest, and Black Diamond Equipment to supply all of our climbing and camping gear. This guarantees that any gear you get from us will be of the highest quality.
OUTCOME: In addition to receiving an unrivaled wilderness education, IWLS students also emerge with the substantial certifications and the experience to back them up.
PERMITTED & INSURED: The International Wilderness Leadership School is permitted and insured in: Glacier Bay National Park, North Cascades National Park, Mount Rainier National Park, Olympic National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Wrangell St. Elias National Park, Great Basin National Park, Klondike Historic National Park, BLM, State of Alaska Division of Lands, The Tongass National Forest, and Department of Natural Resources. Internationally, IWLS is permitted and insured for Ixtaccihuatl and Popocateptl National Park, Cotopaxi National Park, Kilimanjaro National Park, Torres del Paines National Park, Sagarmatha National Park. IWLS is also registered and permitted to operate in British Columbia and the Yukon Territory in Canada.
SOCIAL & ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT: The International Wilderness Leadership School proudly supports social and environmental projects in the locations where we run our trips. In an effort to best support the local people and economies in which IWLS operates, we use local accommodations and resources whenever possible. We seek to immerse our students in local culture by having them actively be a part of it, rather than isolating students from it.
We are members of the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council and Lynn Canal Conservation Association both groups dedicated to preserving the pristine wilderness of Southeast Alaska. In Mexico, IWLS played a part in hurricane Wilma relief efforts, and continues to support local charity and non-profit organizations. In addition IWLS supports porter groups in Nepal and Africa.
